Bigs in the Community

A BIG in the community is the best fit for you! We currently have 800 kids on the wait list waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister and you can help build a positive friendship with one of these youth!

Overview: Commonly known as the Big Brothers Big Sisters program or one to one mentoring. One mentor (Big) and one mentee (Little) spend time together building a friendship based on trust, support, common interests, and fun! Bigs and Littles participate in a variety of activities – everything from riding bikes, skating, reading, working on homework, cooking, playing video games to just talking and sharing with each other

Mentees: Anyone between the age of 6 and 18. These kids just need a little extra support

Mentors: Anyone over the age of 18 who cares about kids

Minimum Commitment: 1 - 3 hours every week or every other week for a minimum of one year

Availability: Edmonton, Strathcona County, Parkland County, Lac La Biche, Morinville, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain

Where: In the community at sporting events, festivals, coffee shops, swimming pools, libraries etc

When: Evenings and/or weekends when the mentor and mentee are both available

Youth in Care

Youth in Care Volunteer, much like our traditional Big Brother/Sister this program works with youth who are the most marginalized and need a positive friendship in their life.

Overview: is an inclusive youth mentoring program designed to give young people the confidence to achieve more. The Youth in Care Program pairs youth with positive, understanding adults who encourage them to find strength from within. Founded on the belief that people are empowered through consistent and supportive relationships, this program is focused on young people who have had involvement with Children Services and could be living in alternate arrangements such as Foster Homes, Group Homes or Kinship placements.

Mentees: Between 6 and 24 years old who are/were involved with Child & Family Services

Mentors: Anyone over 18 who is sensitive other cultures, backgrounds, life circumstances, anyone who feels they can relate to a youth who identifies with some of the above.

Minimum Commitment: On average 1-3 hours every week or every second week

Availability: Edmonton, Strathcona County, Parkland County, Lac La Biche, Morinville, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain

Where & When: In the community, evenings and/or weekends

Club Programs

Club Programs:

Overview: Our Clubs and school based after school programs are safe places for kids to go between school and home. We run registered and non-registered programming, provide snacks and hot meals, and schedule fun and education field trips throughout the year. Club mentors (Bigs) spend time with kids playing games or sports, baking, helping with homework, and supporting our staff.

Mentees: Kids between 6 and 18 in the neighbourhood or school where the Club is located who need somewhere safe to go after school.

Mentors: Anyone over the age of 18 who is comfortable hanging out with a group of children.

Minimum Commitment: On average 1-3 hours every week or every second week

Availability: Edmonton

In-School Mentor

Overview:
Bigs In School is an easy and rewarding way to get involved with a child. It allows volunteer mentors go into schools to spend an hour with a child once a week. One of the unique aspects of Bigs In Schools is that the time is guided by the 20-20-20 rule. Mentors and students spend 20 minutes getting to know each other or catching up, 20 minutes going over homework or reading, and the last 20 minutes participating in recreational activities. Matches do not meet over the summer break or during school holidays.

Mentees: Kids between 6 and 18 looking for support during the school day.

Mentors: Anyone over the age of 18 who cares about kids

Minimum Commitment: 1 hour every week

Availability: Edmonton, Strathcona County, Parkland County, Lac La Biche, Morinville, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain

Where & When: Weekdays 8am - 4pm
