Defined by the ability to make and break curses, and by an enchanting manifestation of deadly nightshade, Curse Crafters are sure to cause a stir. They are ambitions, dark, and reclusive, often preferring the study of esoteric tomes over socialization with those unlikely to understand their craft. Curse crafters can be ruthless. Their enemies don’t dare cross them but their friends find them fascinating, unique, and nuanced as they exist in a moral gray area by their very nature.
-
In the world of Blightshade, Curse Crafters are exceedingly rare and volatile. On a minor scale, a Curse Crafter might inflict a Curse of One Chair Leg Always Being Shorter Than the Other, or a Curse of Perpetually Wet Socks. Stoke a Curse Crafters wrath though and they may inflict a Curse of Boils, an Eviscerating Curse, or a Curse of Compulsion that takes hold of a persons will.
-
The main character of Blightshade, Lorne Atwater is a Curse Crafter. Intellectual, ambitious and independent, Lorne keeps his walls high and his magic on a tight leash. If he loses control, he knows exactly how dangerous it makes him.
Defined by the ability to strengthen and restore others, and by a striking manifestation of olive flowers, Charging witches bring light and warmth wherever they go. Charging witches are generous as, by their very nature, their magic is an aid to others. They are often sunny, passionate people who enjoy socializing and connecting with others. They may be people pleasers, burning themselves out to meet the needs of others. Despite this, their friends would say there could be no more caring and supportive a friend as a Charging witch.
-
In the world of Blightshade, Charging magic is highly prized. A Charging potion can provide energy, clarity and focus. A powerful Charging ritual can restore weakened, or spent magic, create massive surges of power, and allow a witch to far exceed the natural limits of their ability.
-
A main supporting character of Blightshade, Tahj Annand is a Charging witch. Warm and loyal, Tahj does everything in his power to ensure others feel supported and loved, but neglects himself to the point of burn out.
Defined by the ability to control powerful forces, and by a luminous manifestation of bindweed, Binding witches are masters of control, both of themselves and the world around them. Binding witches are assertive leaders. They are clear headed and self-disciplined. At their worst, a binding witch can be controlling, but the friends and family of a Binding witch will tell you that no one is more pragmatic, level-headed, or decisive as a Binding witch.
-
In the world of Blightshade, Binding is a subtle powerhouse. On a small scale, a Binding witch can suppress a destructive impulse, (many a Binding witch has been employed to help someone quit smoking.) On a large scale, a Binding witch can control another witch’s magic, emotions, or even thoughts. However, a bind has to be held in order to be effective. The moment a Binding witch’s focus wanes, so does the effect of their craft.
-
A main supporting character of Blightshade, Vii Harding is a Binding witch. Self-possessed, smart, and capable, Vii holds herself together no matter what. However, she damages her own wellbeing by suppressing unwanted emotion.
Defined by the ability to heal conditions of the body, and by a hardy manifestation of yarrow, Healers are the ultimate caregiver. They are often extraordinarily knowledgeable and nurturing and never flinch from a difficult job (or the sight of blood.) Healers can be vulnerable to arrogance and to thinking they’re the most skillful witch in the room. They’re usually right.
-
In the world of Blightshade, Healers are one of the most powerful magic users on a long enough timeline. Healing magic is slow and steady. In the short term, cuts and bruises vanish like they were never there. In the long term, atrophied muscle can be strengthened, damaged senses restored, and, in the extreme, diseased bone removed and replaced.
-
A main supporting character of Blightshade, Agie Harkwell, is one such extreme case. Called the most powerful witch in the world, Agie traded her humanity for a healing ability unlike any other witch that has ever lived.
Defined by the ability to purify and cleanse the world around them, and by a vibrant manifestation of Hyssop, Cleansing witches are a breath of fresh air everywhere they go. They are organized, minimalistic, and precise. They won’t tolerate carelessness or grime. While some may find a Cleansing witch neurotic, any time spent with them will reveal them to be refreshing and focused. They are the kind of person to inspire others to be their best selves.
-
In the world of Blightshade, Cleansing witches can work independently as they are experts in everything from cleaning a physical space, to treating tainted water and purifying blighted soil. However, Cleansing witches are often found hand in hand with Healers as the two skill sets compliment each other perfectly: A healer to mend the body and treat disease and a Cleansing witch to flush out symptoms, detox the blood, and keep infection at bay.
-
A supporting character in Blightshade, Beloved, is a Cleansing witch. Enigmatic and mysterious, Beloved never strays far from the healer, Agie Harkwell. Beloved’s presence makes flowers bloom, sweetens the air, and washes even curses away.
Defined by the ability to see the future, and by their stately manifestation of irises, Clairvoyants are never caught off guard. Incredibly intuitive and perceptive, a Clairvoyant always sees ten moves ahead. They are planners and intellectuals, and while this lends them to being know-it-all’s, their skills of observation make them good friends and partners as they often know what someone needs before they need it.
-
In the world of Blightshade, Clairvoyants see the future in measures of probability. They experience snippets of distant possibilities like auditory hallucinations. But when the chances of an event become near certain they can experience and inflict visions real enough to touch. They can interact with the world of their vision to see how changes in the future would play out.
-
A supporting character in Blightshade, The Medici, is a Clairvoyant. Reclusive and powerful, The Medici uses her powers to find the futures where powerful magic artifacts are within her reach and, through that knowledge, seizes them for herself.
Defined by the ability to create and enhance beauty through magic, and by their luxurious manifestation of lily of the valley, Glamour witches are used to turning heads. Glamour witches are creative and enjoy the finer things in life. They are drawn to art of every variety. Some may find a Glamour witch materialistic or vain, but spending a day in their shoes could teach anyone to appreciate the beauty of the world more clearly.
-
In the world of Blightshade, Glamour witches use their magic to create beauty, whether that is creating color and pattern in textiles with a snap of a finger, crafting paintings that move and shimmer in the light, or altering their own appearances and the appearances of others.
-
A supporting character in Blightshade, Adalaide Atwater was a Glamour witch. Creative and artistic, Adalaide captured ephemeral beauties in her paintings, but failed to capture the one thing she couldn’t get back: her family.
Defined by the ability to fix the unfixable, and by their stunning manifestation of Calathea, Mending witches are skillful, focused artisans. They tend to be drawn to tactile, practical, earthy things, and their hands are never idle. Mending witches are prone to disappearing into their craft and can be distant, but the same traits that make them disappear into their work also makes them focused, practical, and incredibly skillful.
-
In the world of Blightshade, Mending witches use their skills for hand crafted magic, yes, but their ability extends beyond just fixing tangible things. A skillful Mending witch can influence rifts in relationships and cause solutions to apparently unsolvable situations to emerge as though by divine intervention.
-
A supporting character in Blightshade, Rita, is a Mending witch. She is the owner of the Unbound Restoration, a private collection of the rarest magical tomes in the world and a place where damaged artifacts go to be lifted out of disrepair. Rita is skillful, sharp, and utterly serious about her craft.
