What does BRAIN stand for?
Correct Answer: Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition, and Next Steps.
It’s a tool you can use when making decisions during labor and delivery to ensure that you're fully informed. When something is presented to you by your provider, using the BRAIN acronym to ask questions can help you to have the information you need to make an informed choice.
What are the three phases of labor?
Correct Answer: Early, Active, Transition
Understanding these phases helps you anticipate what’s coming next and how to manage each stage! Early labor is considered to be 1-5 cm, active is considered to be 6-7 cm, and transition is 8-10 cm!
What is the average length of labor for a first-timer?
Correct Answer: 24 hours!
This includes early labor, active labor, transition, and the pushing phase. Knowing this can help you set realistic expectations and avoid feeling overwhelmed if labor takes a while.
True or False: There’s evidence to show that doula support reduces the risk of cesarean
Correct Answer: True!
Studies have shown that having a doula reduces the risk of cesarean by up to 39%. Continuous support from a doula can help you feel more confident, reduce stress, and encourage a more positive birth experience.
What is a membrane sweep?
Correct Answer: A membrane sweep is a manual technique to help labor to begin.
This is where your provider uses a finger to separate the amniotic sac from the cervix. This can help to naturally stimulate labor by releasing hormones like prostaglandins.
True or False: If you have an epidural, you have to push on your back
Correct Answer: False!
While this is a common misconseption and many people with epidurals do push on their back, there are other positions that can be effective and comfortable, even with limited mobility.
What does it mean for your baby to be born en caul?
Correct Answer: A baby born en caul is delivered with the amniotic sac still intact.
Yep, that's right. The baby is born in the sac of water that has been UNBROKEN! This is a rare occurrence and is often considered a sign of good luck!
What percentage of people go into labor on their due date?
Correct Answer: 5%
That's right! It's pretty unlikely that you'll actually go into labor on your due date, which is why many people refer to it as a 'guess date'. Your baby is on no one's timeline but their own, and they will come when they are ready! Patience and trust in the process is key.
What is Wharton’s Jelly?
Correct Answer: The tissue that surrounds the umbilical cord
Wharton’s Jelly is the gelatinous substance that surrounds and protects the blood vessels in the umbilical cord. It helps prevent the cord from being kinked, ensuring that the baby receives a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients.
What are station and effacement?
Correct Answer: The baby's position and the thinning of the cervix
Station refers to how low the baby’s head is in the pelvis and is measured from -4 (very high) to +4 (crowning). Effacement is the thinning of the cervix as it prepares for labor and is measured from 0% (very thick) to 100% (super thin). These are important indicators of how close you are to giving birth, and matter just as much, if not more, than dilation!
How long is the average pushing phase for a first-timer?
Correct Answer: 1-2 hours
Remember though, every person is different so it can vary. You've never done this before! It can take some time for you to figure out how to push effectively, and that totally normal and okay.
True or False: A baby born with the cord wrapped around their neck is an emergency
Correct Answer: False
About 1/3 of babies are born with the umbilical cord wrapped around their neck, and it’s usually not an emergency. Your provider will handle it calmly, often just unlooping the cord after the head is born.
True or False: It is risky to eat and drink in labor.
Correct Answer: False!
For most people, eating and drinking during labor is not only safe but can help maintain energy levels. The practice of fasting during labor is outdated and not evidence-based for most births.
What is a fundal massage?
Correct Answer: A technique to help the uterus contract after birth
A fundal massage is a technique used after birth to help the uterus contract down and prevent excessive bleeding postpartum. While it is uncomfortable, it’s an important part of postpartum care!
True or False: Your water will always break as the very first sign of labor
Correct Answer: False!
Only about 10% of labors begin with the water breaking ( also referred to as premature rupture of membranes, or PROM). Often, the water breaks later during labor, pushing, or even not until your baby is born (also known as an en caul birth!)
