Ask them what the matter is and try to help them

You have set your class a programming challenge and one of your students puts up their hand saying their code is not working. What do you do?

Try to spot where they have gone wrong and point out the solution for them

Draw a flow diagram with them and talk through the problem to try and help them find a solution while working with you

Um, not sure and I don’t know how to get that information either

I know exactly how many have free school meals, also those who have special educational needs and I have a good idea of the home life situation of most of them too

Who cares? It is only a statistic that the government want us to have. It has little relevance on teaching my subject

What did you do during your last school holiday that you are most proud of?

I went on holiday and didn’t take any work with me

I tried to catch up on the marking I didn’t have time to do before

I created a working model of something related to computer science that I think the kids will love to see

I planned the next few weeks of my lessons

How confident are you in your subject knowledge?

There are always more things to learn

There are a few areas I don’t know

God, I hope nobody finds out I know hardly anything

It is the last lesson before breaking up for Christmas. What do you do with your class?

We carry on working until the last minute, they are not on Christmas break yet

I try to do something fun but still related to what we have been recently studying

I let them watch a film or play computer games

I created my own immersive computer science activity/game/quiz in which the whole class can get involved

I stay in my room so pupils can come to chat to me if they want to

You are passionate about your subject and love nothing more than learning new things that you can show to your classes. Your excitement is infectious. You have the ability to get even the most apathetic students excited about the subject. You have a strong work ethic and always give 110% to the job. You are driven to find out new things and present them to your students and want to know everything about technology and won’t rest until you do. However, you must be careful to avoid becoming a workaholic and sacrificing other interests and responsibilities in your eagerness to follow your desire to know more. You can find it difficult to relax and often expect others to have the same enthusiasm for the subject as you do and will often take over other projects which can cause friction with other team members.

You are there for the people around you, you listen without judgement and do whatever is needed. You are a natural cheer leader, cheering for everybody else’s cause and you encourage those who are around you to reach for your dreams and succeed.
