EAST VINCENT HEALTHY YARD Application
East Vincent Healthy Yard Resident Recognition is a voluntary program meant to recognize YOU for using healthy practices to care for your yard, while providing you informational support.
To fully enjoy the interactive and educational application, give yourself 5-10 minutes to navigate through the slides. The duration changes based on your interest or familiarity with the topics.

My yard has native trees
“A plant is considered native if it has occurred naturally in a particular region, ecosystem, or habitat without human introduction” (National Wildlife Federation)
Native Trees Benefits
My yard has native flowers
Benefits of native plants
My yard has native shrubs, ferns, moss and/or grasses
Benefits of Native Shrubs, Ferns, Moss and/or Grasses
My yard has spring, summer, and fall flowering native plants
I reduce the size of my lawn by planting a vegetable garden and/or native plants.
I limit the use of toxic chemicals in my yard
Pesticides should only be used on rare occassions for a known issue where other solutions are not possible/ feasible. Many lawncare companies include pesticides as part of a standard practice, which is harmful to flora and fauna, even if only once or twice a year.
I avoid purchasing plants treated with Neonicotinoids
Common Neonicotinoids: Acetamiprid, Clothianidin, Dinotefuran, Imidacloprid, Nitenpyram, Thiocloprid, Thiamethoxam.
When it rains, it drains !
I am aware of stormwater issues in my yard and I am looking into ways of keeping stormwater from running off my yard by using rain gardens, rain barrels, or other methods.
I remove non-native, invasive plants
"Invasive species is defined as species that is:
1.Non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration; and,
2.Whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health" (See Executive Orders for Invasive Species ~ usda.gov)
Are you familiar with DCNR's Noxious Weed List ?
PA Noxious Weed List categorizes the invasive plants as Severe threat, Significant threat or Lesser threat

I set my lawnmower on the highest cutting level and/or use a mulching mower
I use electric or manual gardening equipment
I leave my flower stalks in place over the winter
I compost my leftover food and yard waste
My yard has or is close to a source of water
I have trees, shrubs, or bird houses where birds can raise their young
I keep fall leaves
Leaving the leaves on the ground in the fall, rather than raking and leaf blowing, has numerous benefits.
I reduce light pollution
"Light pollution, or artificial light at night, is the excessive or poor use of artificial outdoor light, and it disrupts the natural patterns of wildlife, contributes to the increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, disrupts human sleep, and obscures the stars in the night sky" (National Geographic).
Outdoor artificial light at night can negatively impact fireflies/ lightning bugs as well.
