PHCU's name was established in 1999, however, our history actually first began in 1964 with the creation of the SC Baptist Hospital Credit Union. Eight years later Richland Memorial Federal Credit Union was formed. During that time, each credit union's name correlated to the name of the hospital they served. When the two hospitals merged under the new name, Palmetto Health, the two credit unions became one, and we became Palmetto Health Credit Union.
The first federally chartered credit union, Morris Sheppard Federal Credit Union, was established on October 1, 1934, in Texarkana, TX.
Over 86,000 Credit Unions operate in 118 countries, providing high quality and affordable financial services to more than 375 million members.
In Africa, credit unions are known as savings and credit co-operative societies. (SACCOs)
