Do You Speak English?
My Grab driver in Vietnam thought he couldn't speak English. He spoke something better, kindness and friendship. And a little English.
The driver was upset because he saw I WAS A FOREIGNER. He thought foreigners can't speak Vietnamese, and he thought he couldn't speak English. He said, in Vietnamese, "I can't speak English." "I can't talk to this guy.

I came to Vietnam to EAT VIETNAMESE FOOD. I do make money teaching English, visit the beaches, and practice Vietnamese- but I didn't say that to the driver. I told the driver that I came to Vietnam to eat Vietnamese food.

He GAVE ME A SPECIAL CAKE, Banh Tieu. He stopped the motorcycle, got off and handed me one of his own Banh Tieu that he was saving for later. He was excited to share this special thing with me.

The driver said THANK YOU. And that was enough. A gesture of kindness. He knew I spoke Vietnamese and he could have said Cam On, thank you. But he chose to say 'thank you' in English to be friendly.

This is another opinion question. Any answer can be correct.
I think the drive can speak English. He said 'thank you', he used it in the correct situation. And he used it to be kind to me.
I knew from the beginning he did not want to deal with a foreinger and did not want to have to speak English. In the end he decided to speak English anyway. I thought it was really sweet and he made me feel welcome and good. That's English.
This is another opinion question. Every answer can be correct if it describes how you feel.
I think you can speak English. Even a little is enough. Enough to show you care.
I think you can learn more English too. If you want to, I am here to help you.
Maybe over coffee and BanhTieu.
One word is enough. It is like calling somebody by name. It is saying I see you and you are welcome here.
Thank you.
Thank you for learning English.
