A Nobel Prize can be shared by up to three individuals.

Among his many inventions, Alfred Nobel is most known for the invention of dynamite. Nobel was an inventor, entrepreneur and businessman who also wrote poetry and drama. His varied interests are reflected in the Nobel Prizes which he laid the foundation for in 1895 in his last will and testament.

The first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901.

The Nobel Prize award ceremonies are traditionally held on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.

The Nobel Prize laureates are selected by the Nobel Prize-awarding institutions.

In his will Alfred Nobel laid out who he wanted to be responsible for the selection of the Nobel Prize laureates. The prizes were to be awarded by Swedish institutions – apart from the peace prize, whose award was to be decided by a committee of five persons elected by the Norwegian Parliament.

Marie Curie received two Nobel Prizes (Physics 1903 and Chemistry 1911), she shared the physics prize with her husband Pierre Curie. Their daughter Irène Joliot-Curie was awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, she also shared the prize with her husband Frédéric Joliot.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has been awarded a Nobel Peace Prize three times (year 1917, 1944 and 1963).

The Nobel Prize in Literature 1953 was awarded to Winston Churchill "for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values".

68 Nobel Prizes and economic sciences prizes have been awarded to 67 women, two Nobel Prizes were awarded to Marie Curie.
