The National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) is a classification system that identifies and describes general characteristics of tennis-playing ability. The NTRP General Characteristics Guide outlines the abilities of each level from 1.5 (beginner) through 7.0 (touring pro). Generally, USTA Tournaments offer the 2.5 through 5.0 divisions at events.
As a USTA member, you can participate in any tournament level as long as you meet the eligibility criteria of each tournament (ie Age, NTRP, etc). Ranking points are awarded for each tournament–the more you win, the more points you earn in a tournament!
The USTA has a nationwide competitive system that brings uniformity across all 17 sections and combines it to one, simplified structure. This model awards players points based on the various tournament levels and their final results at that event. The higher the level you play, the higher points you're awarded for that outcome.
While all USTA Sanctioned tournaments do have an element of competition, the various USTA tournaments and divisions give players a chance to focus more on fun or competition. For all fun and no ranking stress you can always search for an Unsanctioned event.

You enjoy tournaments for the social atmosphere. You're looking for something close to home in hopes of making more connections with players your level. We suggest searching for Level 7/6 tournaments that host NTRP divisions where you can play at your level. Unsanctioned events could also be a good option for fun play.
Playing for fun is nice but trophies are where it's at! While you might never be a pro level player, that doesn't mean you can't compete like one! We suggest you focus on Level 5/4 tournaments that host NTRP divisions. Earn enough points and your high ranking could earn you a chance to attend the Level 1 NTRP National Championships in your division!
You've done the competitive thing and you're ready for the social side. Whether you're burnt out or just don't have the time for big competition, these tournaments will help you stay active while meeting new friends and having fun. We suggest you play more local Level 7/6 tournaments than the Level 5/4 events. You can play your NTRP division OR test yourself in the more competitive Open or Age Group division.
You've played some of the highest level of tennis and don't want to stop! These are usually players who played college level tennis and beyond looking to keep up that high intensity competition. Level 4 through Level 1 tournaments are ideal for players who are 18-49 playing at 5.0+ NTRP level or 50 years or older playing at a 4.5+ NTRP level. Participation in the Open and Age division events at these tournaments can earn participants a chance to play Women's Intersectionals/Men's Donoff Cup and even play on Team USA at the ITF World Tennis Masters.
