The Magi
The Magi is one of the oldest Witch Houses in existence. Founded in the 1500s in England, Magi witches are master summoners. They also like to work behind the scenes in government to forward their own agendas.
They have been named Faustians or Doctors. This has also fueled rumors that every member of the Magi has to make deals with the Devil in order to join. The House does nothing to quiet these rumors and has been known to add to the whispers to help maintain an air of otherworldly power.
The Merlins
One of the best known Witch Houses in the world. Claiming that their lineage goes back to the druid Merlin, members of the House dress in robes, beards and other accouterments more suited to a cheap Ren Faire than for those who wield great magickal power. They speak in archaic language and are known for their public rituals that border on theatre.
This ridiculous front is put on to distract from their real workings. The Merlin House focuses on illusion and glamour magic. Their motto is “Deceive the eyes of others, but always see truly.” The Merlins only admit men (cis and trans) as well as nonbinary individuals.
The Artificers
This is one of the youngest Witch Houses. Founded in 1815 by Isaac Hardenbrook, the original intention of the House was to use Divination in the stock market. The name “Artificers” was adopted to conceal the members of the House. They use divination to increase their wealth.
The Artificers are also known as master forgers. They create items of great magic, which are sought after by witches around the world.
The Müller Family
Members of this Witch House focus on grimoires: their collection, preservation and creation. They run magical bookstores throughout the world. Being keepers of such great occult knowledge means that they are a secretive about and closely guard the information they have learned from their various grimoires.
It is rumored that the House of the Müller family came to be after several witches used their magic to wipe out the majority of the witches who were working for the Nazis one night in March 1945. There is no known record of who the founding members were, as they were said to have continued to work against fascisim and later communism when Germany was split between East and West.
The Baba Yagas
The Baba Yaga House is one of the most intimidating around. Drawing on Russian folklore, the Baba Yagas cultivate an aura of menace about them. While it has never been acknowledged, the belief is that Baba Yagas have provided magic work for every regime that has ruled Russia for centuries. It is rumored that Rasputin was a member of the House. Most intelligence agencies suspect that the FSB employs Baba Yagas. They are also believed to work as assassins for hire.
Baba Yagas tend to work in the criminal underworld. They provide muscle, hexing, and other services to the highest bidder. They are also suspected of being spies who infiltrate other Witch Houses to gain information to further the House's goals.
The Greek Triad
The Greek Triad is an organization made up of three smaller Houses (the Circes, the Medeas and the Hekates). Each smaller House has claims to being millennia old, with some dating their founding to the days of ancient Greece. The Houses merged in the late 1800s to leverage their influence and resources.
Only women (cis and trans) and nonbinary folk are allowed to be members of the Triad. Its ranks are filled with both family and Adepts. While the House emphasizes mysticism, polytheism and ritual, they also use 21st century tools and mediums to obtain their objectives. The Triad is heavily active in movements such as reproductive rights, female empowerment, and equality.
The Strega
The Strega House is based out of Italy with the rank and file practicing Italian folk magic. They tend to focus on love, wealth and luck spells, as well as magic dealing with sexual issues. Formally founded in 1875, by a half dozen families, the Stregas have gained a large influence over Europe when it comes to issues of passion or wealth. Many Strega witches are advisors to various global companies, especially in the fashion industry.
While the Strega House claims to be a family of Italian witches, there is a large number of witches in Italy who are not part of the house. These unaffiliated witches claim that the Stregas have hijacked ancient witchcraft and commercialized it. There is a constant tension between the house and these others over who can claim being “real” Italian witches.
The Volva
While the Volva House was only formally established in the late 1800s, many members have familial claims of witchcraft back to the early centuries AD. They point to the various sagas with their mentions of magic, berserkers, and volvas (then defined as wise women) to back up their claim. When Christianity started to lose its majority in Sweden, Finland and Norway, a return of ancient beliefs opened the doors for openly practicing magic.
The Volva House tends to keep its activities contained to Scandinavian countries and concerns. Their focus is on preserving and advancing their practices, especially those of native peoples, and maintaining the standard of living for the countries’ citizens. Volvas tend to focus on either healing magic or on martial magic. When they aren’t dealing with local issues, they will hire themselves out as bodyguards or “muscle”.
St. Martin House
The St. Martin House is an old and aristocratic family of witches who can trace their lineage back to before the Reign of Terror. They used their magic to protect their family and holdings throughout the Revolution. Once the dust and heads had settled, they spent a century in hiding, using their magic to ease their way back into prominence.
Today, members of St. Martin fill various roles in the French government and serve as ambassadors for the state. They sit on the boards of various trade unions and corporations. The family also owns various estates throughout France that include wineries. St. Martins focus on alchemy, creating potions that can help or hurt people, depending on their mood.
