STA Expert Perception Tracker - 3/2026
The STA Expert Perception Tracker is a short, 1-minute survey designed to capture sentiment and qualitative insights on key transport topics.
This edition of the STA Expert Perception Tracker focuses on construction and sustainability in EU transport systems, examining sustainability priorities, infrastructure maintenance, sustainability as a factor influencing travel behaviour, and the role of AI-supported modelling in improving sustainability across the infrastructure lifecycle.
The survey will remain open until 31 July 2026.
Which country are you currently based in?
1. What do you think of sustainability requirements for transport infrastructure construction and management?
Environmental sustainability should be the priority.
Economic sustainability should be the priority.
Social sustainability should be the priority (e.g. employment and wealth creation).
Environmental, economic and social sustainability should be given equal importance.
2. How relevant is infrastructure maintenance in reducing the environmental impact of transport systems?
Highly relevant - maintaining infrastructure extends asset lifespan and reduces environmental impacts.
Relevant - maintenance contributes alongside other sustainability measures.
Slightly relevant - environmental performance depends primarily on vehicle technologies.
Not relevant - maintenance has little effect on environmental performance.
3. What would be the main driver of behaviour change in your travel patterns?
Greater convenience and shorter travel times.
Reducing environmental impact.
Lower personal costs.
A balanced combination of all the above.
4. Digital Twins and lifecycle optimisation tools (e.g. scenario simulation and carbon modelling) are increasingly being adopted in transport infrastructure projects. To what extent do you believe AI-supported modelling tools deliver measurable sustainability benefits throughout the infrastructure lifecycle?
Yes, the benefits are clearly measurable.
Benefits are measurable in specific cases.
Benefits remain marginal.
Their impact has not yet been demonstrated.
Thank you for your feedback!
The findings of every survey will be published in a report to share expert insights and support informed dialogue in the transport sector.
