Myth
Ganymede was a beautiful blonde youth from Troy who caught the attention of Zeus when he was out herding his father’s livestock. Zeus transformed into an eagle and took him to Mount Olympus to keep him as his lover and to be the cupbearer of the gods and serve ambrosia. As compensation for taking his son, Zeus gave Tros two swift horses that could run on water and a golden vine.

Knight of Cups

Myth
Hebe, goddess of youth, was the cupbearer for the gods and was also responsible for keeping them eternally young, which differed from immortality. She married Heracles once he died and ascended to Olympus, and her role as cupbearer was passed on to Ganymede. But after Heracles' death, King Eurystheus set off to kill the hero’s descendants over the indignity he had caused him after the 12 labors. Iolaus, Heracles’s nephew, was too old for battle but he prayed to Hebe to rejuvenate his youth for a day. She answered his prayers and Iolaus was able to take his revenge on Eurystheus.

Queen of Cups

Myth
Thetis was a sea goddess who could change her shape at will. Zeus received a prophecy that her son would be greater than his father, so he arranged a mortal, Peleus, to marry her so that her son would not be a threat to the gods. Thetis refused Peleus, but he subdued her by holding fast as she changed into a serpent, a lioness, and even a flame. She eventually consented to the marriage and gave birth to her son, Achilles. In an attempt to make her son immortal, she dipped him into the river Styx, but the heels from which she held him failed to be protected.

Myth
Poseidon was god of the sea and god of horses, but was also known for his bad temper. In one myth, he gave Minos a Cretean bull from the sea for him to sacrifice in his honor after the king defeated his brother in battle. Minos did not want to sacrifice such a majestic animal, and when he offered something lesser, Poseidon was furious and had Aphrodite make Mino’s wife fall in love with the bull. Pasiphae mated with the bull using a caged contraption and birthed a terrible monster, the Minotaur.

Born from a Cesarean section, Asclepius was raised by Chiron, who taught him the art of healing and surgery. Having been recognized as an exceptional healer who could even cure a snake bite, he was given a vial of gorgon's blood by Athena, which had the power to cure death. Asclepius began resurrecting the dead which angered Hades because mortal souls rightfully belonged to him. Zeus smote him for disturbing the natural order, but let him live on in the stars for his devotion to medicine.

Myth
The rainbow goddess Iris was a messenger of the gods, particularly Queen Hera, and would travel on a rainbow to deliver news to the mortals on Earth. She would also fetch waters from the River Styx whenever a God wanted to swear an oath in order to consecrate it. During the titanomachy, she was the messenger for the Olympians, while her sister Arke was a rival messenger for the titans. After the war was won, Zeus tore the wings off of her sister Arke and gave them to Thetis as a wedding present. Thetis later gave them to her son Achilles, who wore them on his feet.

Myth
Hippolyta, daughter of Ares, was the queen of the amazons, a race of warrior women that lived near the Black Sea. In one version of the myth, Heracles was told to retrieve the queen's girdle as his ninth labor, so he traveled to their lands and met with Hippolyta. Impressed by the hero, Hippolyta planned on handing over the girdle, but Hera would not let Heracles win so easily, so she spread a rumor to the Amazonians that their queen was being kidnapped. They attacked the hero and feeling betrayed, he killed Hippolyta and stole her girdle.

Myth
Ares, god of war, was having an affair with Aphrodite who was married to Hephaestus. He left his companion Alectryon by the door to keep watch, but he fell asleep while on guard. The sun-god Helios saw them have sex and told Hephaestus, who was furious about the betrayal. He fashioned a nearly invisible net of chains and trapped them in the act for all the gods to see. After being mocked, Ares turned Alectryon into a rooster as punishment, now announcing the arrival of the sun every morning.

Myth
Achilles, the son of Peleus and the sea-goddess Thetis, was born mortal. In an attempt to make him immortal, his mother dipped him into the River Styx, holding him by the heel and leaving that single point vulnerable. He grew to become the greatest hero of the Trojan War. Though warned by prophecy, Achilles chose to live a short, glorious life over a long, lusterless one, and went on to avenge his companion Patroclus in battle. After slaying Hector, he turned the tide of the war, but ultimately met his fate when Paris struck him with a fatal arrow.

Myth
Bellerophon was the son of Poseidon and a great hero that tamed Pegasus while it was drinking at a fountain. He was in exile for murder and while seeking purification he was sent to King Lobates. Given an impossible task, he succeeded in defeating the fire-breathing Chimera while riding Pegasus and even escaped an ambush by the king. His hubris grew, and so Bellerophon attempted to fly to Olympus, but Zeus sent a gadfly to sting the flying horse. Pegasus bucked the hero off and he plummeted back down to Earth.

Queen of Swords
You possess a mind that cuts through confusion with ease. Like one who has faced truth without turning away, you value clarity, honesty, and understanding above all. Myth
Athena was the god of wisdom and warfare and is usually associated with owls. She was born with armor from Zeus’s forehead and was thought to be his favorite child. In one myth, she was challenged by a talented woman named Arachne to a weaving contest. Athena wove a tapestry of the Olympians' triumph over their enemies, but Arachne wove the god’s infidelities and cruelties to mankind. Although perfect, Arachne had offended the goddess with her tapestry and after being beaten with a staff, she hung herself in embarrassment. Athena took pity and brought her back as a spider to spin webs for all time.

Myth
Sisyphus was the king of Ephyra, but was known for being ruthless as he constantly violated Xenia, the Greek law of hospitality. One night, he saw Zeus kidnap a river god’s daughter and when he reported it, he incurred Zeus’s wrath. Zeus sent Thanatos to chain up Sisyphus, but the king was cunning, and escaped death twice. Once by binding death himself, and again by pretending to return to scold his wife. As punishment for defying the gods, Sisyphus was sent to Tartarus to push a boulder up a hill in perpetuity as it would always roll back down as Sisyphus neared the top.

Myth
Hephaestus was the god of fire and of the forge, and was born from Hera alone but he emerged with a deformed foot, and so Hera tossed him from Mount Olympus into the sea below. He was rescued by sea animals, and Hephaestus made his forge in a volcano, where he exacted revenge. He built a golden throne for his mother, but when she sat on it, she was trapped in and no god could free her. Zeus promised him Aphrodite’s hand in marriage in exchange for Hera’s freedom, and Hephaestus agreed.

Myth
Charon was the ferryman of the Underworld that would transport the shades of the dead across the rivers Styx and Acheron into Hades, but at the cost of an Obol. In one instance, when Heracles was sent to fetch Cerberus, he overpowered Charon with his strength and forced him to take him into the underworld. As punishment for letting a mortal cross, Hades shackled Charon for a year, halting all passage into the underworld until then.

Myth
Persephone was known as the Dread goddess or the queen of the underworld after she was abducted by Hades. In one myth, Aphrodite had fallen in love with a beautiful baby named Adonis, but gave the child to Persephone to raise in the meantime. Upon looking at the boy, the queen had also fallen in love and refused to give Adonis back. Zeus settled the dispute by splitting a third of his year with each goddess, and let him keep the last third, which he spent with Aphrodite. Persephone grew jealous and sent a wild boar to kill Adonis to spite Aphrodite.

Myth
Croesus was a rich King of Lydia that had amassed his wealth from the gold found at the river touched by Midas. He met a renowned Athenian traveler named Solon, and after showing him his treasures he asked him who was the happiest person he’s known. Solon told the stories of three men who had died honorably and surrounded by love, and said to count no man happy until his death. Croesus was not amused, but he understood later when his kingdom was conquered by Persians. Right before his execution, Croesus spoke of Solon and the Perisan king spared his life after being moved by his story.
