The lack of facial feathers prevents fruit pulp from sticking to their faces.

A fierce hunter with sharp senses and sharper talons. This carnivore maintains a diet of small birds, rodents, and other little creatures that end up as owl pellets to get dissected in 7th grade science classes. They are fairly solitary birds native to the arctic regions of North America and the Palearctic and breed in the tundra regions of said places. Unlike most owls the Snowy Owl is active during both the night and day.

These striking birds keep to themselves for the most part. They stay near their nesting tree and have a carnivorous diet of snakes, rodents, bugs, and any small creature misfortunate enough to meet a secretary bird and experience a real curb stomp. They only travel when food is scarce. They are native to the Sub-Saharan savanna and grasslands of Africa.

These guys have huge communities; living among other Auklet subspecies. They range from the North Pacific to the Bering Strait. Their diet typically consists of krill, larval fish, copepods, and pteropods. Auklets are doting parents and nearly half remain with their chosen partner every mating season. Both parents take heavy responsibility for the single egg they typically hatch. Fun fact: They smell like citrus fruit kind of!

Humanity’s long forgotten best friend. Pigeons are originally a cliff dwelling species so they do well in city scapes, hills, and of course cliffs. Much like dogs there is an insane variety of pigeons that fulfill varying jobs. They are bred to compete in competitions of athletics, beauty, and even sometimes food. (Roasted dove is amazing) Pigeons have faced their fair share of challenges but still they persist admirably. Their diet usually consists of fruit, seeds, and some plants. Fun fact: The Nicobar pigeon is the closest living relative of the Dodo bird! Dodo birds actually share a common ancestor with all pigeons.

One of the largest birds of flight in the world. They can bear a wingspan of up to 9 feet. Not only are they huge birds, but they’re also highly intelligent problem solvers. If a bone is too large to eat they drop it on rocks to break it up. This is doubly useful since they populate in mountainous regions across parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. You may be able to guess this since they’re vultures but 90% of their diet consists of bones. Like many scavenger birds their stomach acid is very powerful and can dissolve a bone within 24 hours. Bearded vultures are also fashionable as they bathe in iron-rich mud to give themselves a reddish appearance that is thought to denote status or dominance. These are truly an impressive bird and like all birds, vultures and otherwise, they fulfill an extremely necessary role in their native environment.
