The first year of Earth Hour was in Sydney, Australia in the year of 2007. The aim was to focus attention on climate change. That year, over 2 million people and businesses across the city participated by turning out their lights and reducing their energy usage. The event now happens globally and is organized each year by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
This year, Earth Hour begins on March 24th at 8:30PM. The date and time are held during the Vernal (Spring) Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, and during the Autumnal (Fall) Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. In other words, World Earth Hour is held when the sun is setting at approximately the same the same time all over the globe.
