Test Your Street Smarts Level 2
What is the most common distracting behavior of drivers at a stoplight?
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, eating and drinking while at a stoplight is the most common behavior.
Each day in the United States, approximately 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
Distracted driving is driving while doing another activity that takes your attention away from driving. Distracted driving can increase the chance of a motor vehicle crash.
Reaching for, answering or dialing a cell phone increases the risk of a crash or near crash by how much?
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, any of these activities can increase your risk of a crash at least 3 times.
Unfortunately, statistics based on police-reported crash data almost certainly underestimate the role of distraction in fatal crashes. Police crash reports aren't a reliable way to count cellphone-related collisions because drivers often don't volunteer that they were on the phone and there is usually a lack of other evidence to determine drivers' phone use. Therefore, the actual risk may be higher.
How many teens who text, say they have texted while driving?
At 55 mph, sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds, long enough for your car to travel the length of a football field.
It is illegal in Florida to operate a motor vehicle while texting.
Are vehicles required to stop when a pedestrian is crossing at an unsignalized crossing using a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB?)
When passing a cyclist using the road to travel, vehicles are allowed to pass but must maintain how many feet of distance from the cyclist?
