No-show socks
Go for the sockless look. Mankles are in! But remember that no-show socks are meant for casual settings only. Wear these socks with shorts, chinos, or even a casual suit. No-shows go great with boat shoes, oxfords, and low-top sneakers.
Don't wear no-shows with high tops or boots though. You'll get blisters on the back of your heels where your shoes rub against your skin.

Solid mid-calf socks
You can't go wrong with mid-calf socks when wearing long pants, and even shorts. Mid-calf socks are the socks that should be filling up your sock drawers. They go perfectly with sneakers, loafers, dress shoes, boots, and everything in between.
When attending a formal event, keep to solid dark colors like black and navy. You may choose to add some ribbing for texture. If you're really trying to impress, go for high-quality material like cashmere or silk.

Printed mid-calf socks
You can't go wrong with mid-calf socks when wearing long pants, and even shorts. Mid-calf socks are the socks that should be filling up your sock drawers. They go perfectly with sneakers, loafers, dress shoes, boots, and everything in between.
Printed socks are on trend. Subtle patterns like polka dot and argyle add a nice touch. To make a statement, go for bold prints or bright colors. Why not? As long as it's a casual, or at most semi-formal, event. Go subtle with a fun print that peeks out under long pants, or champion your individuality with printed socks and shorts.
But beware not to go overboard: if you're already wearing a bold-printed shirt or pants, you may want to consider solid socks.

Ankle socks
Ankle socks should rarely be worn. They are not fashion accessories, and so they should be limited to the gym or other physical activities.
The same rule applies to white athletic socks (of any length) in any situation. In fact, if you're going to go with athletic socks at all, go black!
That being said, ankle socks are perfect for workouts, runs, hikes, house moving, etc. Get cotton socks or socks blended with synthetic fibers for the most durable and breathable fit.

Over the calf socks
Over the calf socks are only needed if you have a strong, strong desire to keep warm. They're identical to mid-calf socks when worn with long pants, and these socks should NEVER be worn with shorts.
Few retailers still have this style on offer. Those that do charge exorbitant prices for a paltry selection. Though if you're braving an Antarctica-scaled winter, wool and cashmere socks will keep you the warmest.
