It governs your survival instincts and your need for basic necessities like food, shelter, and clothing. The root chakra helps revitalize your overall well-being and keeps you grounded.

The Solar Plexus chakra is the third of the seven chakras. It is located in the abdominal region, above your navel and up to the breastbone. This chakra controls your metabolism and digestion. Another name for this chakra is the personal power chakra because it helps you tap into your powerful side, fills you with energy, and controls your self-esteem and confidence. The Sanskrit word for the Solar Plexus is Manipura, which means “lustrous gem.”

Located in the center of the chest, the heart chakra is the emotional energy center of your body. This means it is the balance between your physical and spiritual self, the human being residing in this world and the spiritual being aware of planes beyond our immediate understanding. The more open your heart chakra is, the more capable you are of recognizing the spiritual in everyday circumstances (i.e. synchronicity, deep appreciation for the beauty of a flower, messages from spiritual guides).

Emotions are complicated. They are intensely personal and private, yet most of the time, they are responses to relationships and circumstances outside of yourself. The heart chakra is a perfect reflection of this. As much as the heart chakra tells you about yourself and your own willingness to open up to the world or hide from it, its energy also lets the people around you know, on an energetic level, how much you are willing to give or receive. The throat chakra (aka your communication chakra or vishuddha in sanskrit) is the communication center in our energy bodies. Recognized by its pale blue color, it is located over your physical throat and includes the thyroid, parathyroid, neck, jaw, mouth, and ears.

Vishudda means “purification” in sanskrit. This is the chakra that allows you to express your authentic truth. This chakra aids in verbal communication, but this is a limiting view of what a balanced throat chakra is capable of. Communication involves observation and listening and can be achieved through written word, symbolism, and body language. A balanced Throat Chakra enhances your ability to listen to the world and increases your artistic expression.

It can be extremely difficult to find the right words to express your desires, needs, opinions, thoughts, or wants, especially if you are shy. When you consider the impact of tone and inflection, trying to communicate clearly so that you are not misunderstood or do not accidentally hurt someone can seem impossible.

Communication is a complex process deserving far more attention and respect than it usually receives. It requires thoughtfulness and clarity to choose the words, symbols, or actions which will accurately express the idea you want to convey without misunderstandings.

The third eye chakra (aka your inner eye chakra, spiritual chakra or ajna in sanskrit) is the sixth of the seven chakras. Located on your forehead between both eyes, it is also commonly referred to as the Brow Chakra.

The Sanskrit word Ajna means “beyond wisdom.” This is the chakra that connects you with your intuition to help guide your spirit by using your inner knowledge. This chakra tends to receive more attention than the others because it is often discussed in relation to psychics, mediums, and tarot readers.

Balancing and opening the third eye chakra allows you to learn to expand your awareness beyond your five senses and will broaden your perceptions so you can more easily see the truth.

Have you ever noticed that a family member, friend, business associate, or new person in your life seems “off” with seemingly no explanation?
