Where is Monica this week?
Hey, it's Monica and in the picture above, I was standing in front of Wendell Phillips Academy High School at 214 E. Pershing Ave. in Bronzeville.
Tune in: Named after an ardent abolitionist and labor reformer, the school served as the academic home in the 1930s and ‘40s to music greats Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke and Dinah Washington, as well as the players who would form the nucleus of the Harlem Globetrotters.
- More recently Phillips got a new gym and annex with a Hall of Fame, but continues to face challenges around underenrollment and violence.
If you go: Stop by Pearl's Place restaurant just down the street where the southern breakfast buffet rocks, parking is free and Dinah Washington greets you in the ladies bathroom.
