The United Nations defines Gender-Based Violence (GBV) as “Any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life”.
Gender refers to the roles and behaviors that society associates with being female or male. Rigid gender norms can result in stereotyping and curb our expectations of both women and men. A society’s understanding of gender changes over time and varies from culture to culture. As defined by the Government of Canada.
The National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence - Community Engagement Initiative is in partnership with and funded by Women and Gender Equality (WAGE).
