How you experience pain is very complex. It involves many parts of your nervous system and your brain. It can also be affected by your emotions, your surroundings, and other things going on in your body and in your life.

Chronic pain often involves the body’s warning systems becoming overly sensitive. This can mean your nerves and brain send and receive pain signals even though no harm is occurring. It can also mean new nerve cells grow for the sole purpose of sending pain signals, which may be false alarms. Everyone with chronic pain wants to get better.
