The French government became the first in Europe to make the landmark ruling of banning the wearing of burkas, the traditional Islamic full-face veil, in public. Opinion is divided over this contentious decision with some feeling that it is essential to unveil women from burkas in order to have a cohesive sense of “French identity”, while others feel that it is a racist and insensitive ruling.
