For a while, the decision to subtitle or to dub films and TV depended on the country you were watching from. Nowadays we can sometimes choose (DVD’s can come with both options) and everyone acknowledges the fact that subs or dubs affect the way we experience the content. Anime lovers are particularly passionate about their preference for one or the other (original vs. Americanization). Dubbing makes it accessible to everyone. Eyes watch and ears listen – instead of having eyes watch and read and ears ignore. However, an actor’s voice is part of his performance and some will say that if you replace it with another, you kill the performance and you also kill the tolerance for different languages and cultures making way for snobbish remarks such as the too common “foreign stuff is for foreigners”.
