The United Nations defines Gender-Based Violence (GBV) as “Any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life”.
Gender refers to the roles and behaviors that society associates with being female or male. Rigid gender norms can result in stereotyping and curb our expectations of both women and men. A society’s understanding of gender changes over time and varies from culture to culture. As defined by the Government of Canada.
Within Gender-Based Violence, intersecting identities contribute to compounding marginalization and distinct experiences in forms of oppression. (For example: An individual has immigrated from a Muslim country and is LGBQT2+ and who lives in a rural area has intersecting identities).
Capacity building is the process by which individuals and organizations obtain, improve, and retain the skills, knowledge, tools, equipment, and other resources needed to do their jobs competently. It allows individuals and organizations to perform at a greater capacity.
