Happy holidays!
You’re a solitary creature who relishes the opportunity to reflect on the symbolic progression from one year into the next. Part of you empathizes with the archetypal Grinch, who famously observed the holidays in solitude from high on a snowy mountain. You may or may not scheme to put the kibosh on celebrations from noisy neighbors.
You go with the flow and yield control to more ambitious hosts. Whether you nonchalantly sign up for a side, bring a store-bought dessert or book two tickets to Aruba just because neither of you has ever been, and it’s about time, and why not? Unfazed by holiday stress, you navigate the season with aplomb.
You make it happen — for charities, family members, neighbors, colleagues and your nephew’s soccer team. Everyone basks in the warmth of your generosity, through the food you prepare, gifts you painstakingly select, and through your thoughtful messages hand-written inside holiday cards. Even your mail carrier knows you’re a giver.
At the center of your holiday universe is banter that's cheerful and a little chaotic. You can feel the absence of friends who can't make it, and side note: Zoom is not the same thing. Tis the season when you casually drop "twas" into everyday conversation, as in: "Twas right before you got here" or "Twas on the bookshelf last I saw it." Gift cards are not your style. You prefer presents piled into tidy towers.
You have three holiday decorations, and one is for Halloween. Where to place the other two dominated your thoughts for most of one weekend in early December. You set out the precise number of dishes that corresponds to the number of guests. Your gift list is meticulously curated and regimented. Come Jan. 2, all holiday decorations have been stored in the closet. With those put away, all the holiday clutter is vanquished, and your stylish, unencumbered life can resume.
The eggs are free-range, and you can taste the difference that makes in your holiday cookies. Gluten-free options abound at dinner. You fashioned holiday decorations from dried hyacinth blooms, and your compost pile always receives a healthy donation this time of year, which you’re convinced is the key to your award-winning vegetable garden.
Your light display turned the neighborhood into a holiday hit. It’s like elves descended from the North Pole and annexed a slice of fairyland. You like festive hats, foods from literature like goose and chestnuts, and the color cyan. Wherever you end up for any holiday, your buoyant spirit is sure to lift others.
One store is left open yet five people remain on your gift list, and the store is 40 miles away. Family touches down in an hour. The oven timer dings and suddenly you remember that you forgot to use unsalted butter so the Kolache dough will rise. With so much going on, you still find moments to enjoy the season. All those details you're tending to will pay off with happy memories.
