The Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974 made it illegal to discriminate “on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, or age in credit transactions.” Before the law, many banks required women to bring a man’s cosignature to obtain a credit card. This law was a huge step forward for women’s financial independence.
After the first female Supreme Court Justice was appointed in 1981, three more women have served on the highest court in America. In U.S. history, there have been 114 Supreme Court Justices, 108 of which have been white men.
The late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was quoted saying: “...when I'm sometimes asked when will there be enough [women on the supreme court]? And I say when there are nine, people are shocked. But there'd been nine men, and nobody's ever raised a question about that."
