The egg needs a role model

If there was an egg but no chicken, how could the egg know what to evolve into. With so many things that could evolve from an egg, the egg needs a role model, a full grown chicken.

It's a no-brainer that the chicken came before the chicken egg, but there were plenty of animals that laid eggs a long time before there were chickens.

Mutation
If a chicken lays eggs, then a chicken necessarily hatches from an egg. So you don't need a chicken for the first egg, since a different animal could lay it. You do need an egg for the first chicken, otherwise it is not a chicken. Hence the egg came before the chicken.
